I was the worst runner. Literally! I ran cross country in high school and usually placed last or next to last in all the meets. But I loved being outdoors in the fresh air, surrounded by positive teammates. I enjoyed those rare yet beautiful moments when I thought I couldn't possibly go on but found that strength deep inside and still triumphed to the finish line. Running encourages the belief that anything is possible. I decided to run my first marathon with Team for Kids in 2010 in NYC, Boston-qualified a year later, and ever since I've been really hooked, thanks to my coaches who believed in me. I love passing that along to everyone I coach and mentor. You are always more capable than you think!

Q&A with Sibel

What program do you coach?
Group Training and Team for Kids

What languages do you speak?
English and Turkish

How would you describe your coaching style?
I believe in structure, but for the most part I'm not a very technical runner or coach. For example, if you want to improve your speed, know that running a little bit faster than your normal easy pace will help! You can but don't necessarily need to run certain laps or distances at a set time to accomplish a specific goal race time. If you do push yourself regularly out of your comfort zone once or twice a week, you will get better.

What is your proudest coaching moment?
I have two! One, I am incredibly proud of a client who I helped improve her marathon PR over 40 minutes and Boston-qualify for the first time, because I know how special that is. Two, I'm very proud of a new runner who I ran alongside with for his first mile that he ran without walking .

What is your favorite workout to coach and why?
Fartleks! Swedish for "speed play." Run for fun.

How many years have you been coaching?
I've been mentoring and/or coaching since 2012.
