NYRR Virtual Racing Powered by Strava is transforming organized racing as we know it. Freed from geographical limits, runners from around the globe can all take part in the same race—in new and exciting ways. Since the launch in January 2018, there have been more than 555,000 total virtual racing finishers from 196 countries.*

What Is a Virtual Race?

A virtual race is a race that can be run at your convenience during a specified period of time. Create your free Strava account, sign up for a race, and run or walk the distance of the race on a course you create wherever you are.

NYRR Virtual 6 and 9+1 Programs

NYRR Virtual 6 Program

Runners may choose to purchase a race for credit toward the NYRR Virtual 6 program. NYRR Virtual 6 program participants that register for and complete six NYRR virtual races at the NYRR Virtual 6 program rate between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 will be eligible to receive one non-complimentary guaranteed entry to the 2025 RBC Brooklyn Half. Limit one Brooklyn Half entry per person.

The ability to register for the NYRR Virtual 6 Program is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. The NYRR Virtual 6 program will not be available to additional registrants once NYRR Virtual 6 registrant spaces have been exhausted. NYRR Virtual 6 program participants must be at least 18 years of age.

The RBC Brooklyn Half, the largest half-marathon in the country, is an iconic 13.1-mile journey through the amazing borough of Brooklyn. The race starts near the Brooklyn Museum and ends on the Coney Island boardwalk.

TCS New York City Marathon 9+1 Program

NYRR's 2024 9+1 program offers non-complimentary guaranteed entry to the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon.

You can complete the program in 2024 by registering for and completing nine NYRR in-person or virtual 9+1 qualifying races, volunteering at one +1 qualifying opportunity, and ensuring that your NYRR membership is active as of December 31, 2024. For virtual races that are eligible for 9+1 credit, select the "Premium tier" during registration to earn a 9+1 credit for that race.

How to Complete Your Virtual Race

1. Register in your NYRR account. During registration, you will be asked to connect your NYRR account to your Strava account.

2. When the virtual race window begins, use either the Strava app or a GPS device to track your run. Manual uploads, treadmill runs, and activities where friends have "tagged" you do not count.

3. To account for any gaps in GPS coverage, run slightly more than the required race distance. Then upload or save your run in Strava.

4. Open the Strava app, choose your activity, and tap “Edit”. Make sure your activity sport is set to "Run," "Handcycle," or "Wheelchair".

5. Set your Strava activity privacy to "Everyone".

6. Tap “Update Activity”. Make sure to save your activity within 3 days of the race end date.
