John Garretson
John is a New Jersey die-hard and an avid runner who always had aspirations to give back to the sport he loves through coaching and mentoring. He made that dream a reality at the start of the pandemic by becoming a RRCA-certified running coach!
While he’s still relatively new to the coaching game, he’s been able to marry his passion with his profession as a professional communicator to become a coach with NYRR.
His purpose is to coach athletes of all types to identify, motivate, and cultivate their best selves when it comes to the sport of running.

How would you describe your coaching style?
A friendly and approachable can of motivational Red Bull.
What is your proudest coaching moment?
Starting up my private coaching business and becoming a NYRR coach!
What is your favorite workout to coach and why?
Long runs because they increase our running economy and mental fortitude in the most gratifying ways.

Where is your favorite place to run in New York City?
I'm a low-key fan of Harlem Hills (but don't tell anyone)!
What is your favorite NYRR race?
The NYRR Staten Island Half! One of the more underrated races. I love the ferry ride to and from the island and the run along the waterfront.
What is your personal running motto?
Be consistent and hold good form—everything else will take care of itself.
