Cultivating a Passion for Running and a Wellness Mindset
What sets Run for the Future (RFTF) apart from other sports programs is its inclusive approach. Unlike traditional running programs that often cater to seasoned athletes, RFTF welcomes applicants who may have never considered themselves runners or athletes. Yuqi, a new participant, said, “I applied to the program because of my passion for wanting to step out of my comfort zone. I have always wanted to try running as a sport but felt that I was never made for running. I love the idea that this program introduces me to not just running, but also self-care and being in an environment filled with other young women like me, as it is important to feel supported by others around me.” This inclusivity helps to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and open doors to a world of possibilities.
Through a supportive environment, RFTF encourages participants to redefine their notions of what it means to be a runner, instilling confidence, and a sense of belonging every step of the way. Upon the program's completion, RFTF participants are invited back as alumnae to continue being supported through workshops, unique events, and NYRR races. Alumna Mei said, “I love to connect with others who share similar goals and mindsets, allowing us to exchange ideas and support each other through any training challenges. I also aim to reconnect and form bonds with past RFTF alumnae, fostering lasting relationships both in running and professionally.”
As these young women lace up their sneakers and hit the pavement, they are not just running toward the finish line; they are running toward a brighter, healthier future. According to Courtney Lyons, NYRR Run for the Future specialist, “The program isn't just a running program; it's a movement, fueling the dreams and aspirations of tomorrow's leaders, and the next generation of female athletes, one step at a time.”
