And It Don't Stop: More Ways to Get Fit in the Bronx

Next weekend’s New Balance Bronx 10 Mile is all set to showcase some of the borough’s best features, with a trip along the Grand Concourse that will take runners past sites like the Edgar Allan Poe cottage and the New York Botanical Garden before the finish just outside of Yankee Stadium.

But your time in the Bronx doesn’t have to be a one-and-done deal that ends on September 29. New York Road Runners has even more opportunities to keep running this fall in locations throughout the Bronx—after all, it’s the borough where NYRR got its start back in 1958! Read on for more ways you can stay fit in New York City’s northernmost borough.

The New Balance Bronx 10 Mile brings runners through (as the race’s name suggests) 10 miles of Bronx streets, but there’s so much more to explore! The Bronx is made up of 57 square miles of space, and with NYRR Running Routes, you can see that much more of what the borough has to offer.

Explore the borough’s famed cross-country course at Van Cortlandt Park, see the redesigned High Bridge as you cross over the Harlem River into Manhattan, or go beyond the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile finish line with our Yankee Stadium to Grant’s Tomb route.

If you're looking to stay involved with the NYRR community beyond New Balance Bronx 10 Mile race day, you can meet up with a group of runners in parks throughout the Bronx at one of our NYRR Open Run sites. NYRR Open Run offers free, weekly runs in parks throughout the New York metropolitan area, with locations across the five boroughs, as well as in Jersey City, NJ, and on Long Island.

Did you know?

Much like New York Road Runners itself, NYRR Open Run also got its start in the Bronx. The first-ever NYRR Open Run took place at St. Mary’s Park on June 3, 2015.

Train with NYRR Coaches on One of Cross-Country's Most Famous Courses

As referenced above, for cross-country runners in the Northeast, there are few courses more well-known than Van Cortlandt Park. Situated just beyond the end of the 1 train line at 242nd Street, the park’s dirt and crushed-rock trails, as well as its nearby track, have played host to countless meets and training sessions over the past 100-plus years.

If you're looking to get your weekly NYRR Open Run times down, or to prepare for an upcoming NYRR race, you can work out with NYRR coaches right in the Bronx at "VCP."

NYRR is offering an eight-week Group Training session at Van Cortlandt Park for runners who want to take on the course’s challenging combo of the Flats, the Back Hills, and even an occasional trip up Cemetery Hill. Workouts take place on Wednesday mornings starting at 6:30 a.m.

And as the park’s Tortoise & Hare statue suggests, there’s space for runners of all speeds—from the fleet-footed “hares” to the steady-striding “tortoises.” Whatever your pace may be, NYRR coaches will work with you to help you reach your fitness goals.

The Bronx is the birthplace of New York Road Runners, and we’re hoping it’ll be the starting point for your next pursuit of a new personal best. We'll see you out there!
