2021 9+1 Program FAQs
Read below for answers to frequently asked questions about the 9+1 program in 2021, through which runners can earn guaranteed, non-complimentary to the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon.
What are the requirements to complete the 2021 9+1 program?
The requirements are the same as previous years. To earn non-complimentary guaranteed entry to the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon, runners must:
- Register for and complete 9 qualifying races
- Volunteer at one +1 qualifying opportunity
- Have an active NYRR membership as of December 31, 2021
If I complete the 2021 9+1 program, can I use my non-complimentary guaranteed TCS New York City Marathon entry for 2023 or another future year?
No. Runners who complete the 2021 9+1 program will be eligible for entry only to the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon. Entry will not be rolled forward to 2023 or other future years. If you already have entry to the 2022 Marathon through another method, you cannot complete the 2021 program and to gain eligibility to the 2023 or later Marathon.

Runners can register for and complete both the in-person and virtual versions of a race and earn two separate credits (e.g. register for and complete both the in-person Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K and the Virtual Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K Powered by Strava).
How do I earn 9+1 credit for a virtual race?
During virtual race registration, select the Premium tier. Learn more about how to complete virtual races.
Will I earn credit for races I ran and/or volunteer shifts completed earlier in 2021?
No. The 2021 9+1 program will start with the (in-person) Front Runners New York LGBT Pride Run. There will not be retroactive credits for races earlier in the year.
What are the +1 volunteer opportunities?
Opportunities can be found on our volunteer opportunities page and include many 2021 NYRR races, starting with the Front Runners New York LGBT Pride Run, as well as the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon Start and Course. Please note that the 2021 Marathon +1 opportunities are for 2021 only. Runners who already signed up to volunteer at the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon Finish can move to an open Start or Course role before September 30 to earn a +1 credit.
Note: Runners must sign up for and complete their volunteer shift in 2021 and should be aware that opportunities late in 2021 will fill quickly.
Will there be a 2021 4 Out of 6 program for entry to the 2022 NYC Half?
No.

Do I need to be an active NYRR member while I complete the program?
Your membership must be active on December 31, 2021 in order to complete the 9+1 program.
