General FAQs

Where can I find my race bib?

Your personalized race bib can be found in your confirmation email (the second email you would have received from NYRR after registering).

I am already registered for Love of Running. How can I upgrade to the Finisher Medal tier?

If you are already signed up for the Love of Running tier, you can just re-register for the Virtual Marathon at the Finisher Medal tier. Once you re-register, you will get all the perks of this tier, including a finisher medal upon race completion. There is no need to cancel your Love of Running registration.

How do I update my address or confirm it is correct for the delivery of my finisher package?

To confirm your mailing address is correct or to edit your address, please log into your NYRR account and go to Dashboard > Account Settings > Mailing Address. Please make all updates to your address by October 21.

How will I claim my guaranteed, non-complimentary entry to the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon?

Runners who registered for Guaranteed Entry or Team for Kids and completed the full 26.2-mile distance in a single run activity will be able to claim their 2023 TCS NYC Marathon guaranteed, non-complimentary entry in early 2023.

If I am registered for the in-person 2022 TCS NYC Marathon or already earned guaranteed entry to the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon, can I earn additional entry to a future marathon through the 2022 Virtual TCS NYC Marathon?

No. Registration for the Guaranteed Entry or Team for Kids tier is not open to runners registered for the 2022 TCS NYC Marathon or those who already earned entry to the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon through the 2020 resolution option. All runners can register for the Finisher Medal or Love of Running tier.

Strava FAQs

How do I properly complete my race on Strava?

You must take the following steps in Strava for your virtual race to be counted:

  • Set your activity privacy to "everyone"
  • "Make sure your activity sport is set to "run," "handcycle," or "wheelchair"
  • Before you finish your race, confirm that you ran slightly over the race distance. Running less than the 26.2-mile distance (or sometimes, even the exact distance) will not count as the completion of your virtual marathon and trigger the issue of your digital badge by Strava.
  • Make sure the activity is a GPS upload. Manual uploads, treadmill runs, and activities where friends have "tagged" you do not count.

How do I know which Strava account my NYRR account is connected to?

Log in to your NYRR account. Go to your Dashboard, then into Account Settings, and then to Apps & Services, and you will see your Strava ID number.

To view that account on Strava, type https://www.strava.com/athletes/ into your address bar, and copy and paste your Strava ID to the end of the URL (ex. https://www.strava.com/athletes/26503343).

Where can I find my Strava subscription trial?

Your Strava subscription trial can be found in your confirmation email (the second email you would have received from NYRR after registering). If you cannot find this email, please contact us at help@nyrr.org.

How can I record my run on Strava? Do I need to use two separate devices?

In order to properly complete your virtual marathon, you will need a 26.2-mile GPS activity uploaded to your Strava account. Run with any Strava-compatible tracking device such as a GPS watch and sync your device to Strava, or record your run directly on your phone using the ;Strava app.

You will only need to upload your run to your Strava profile from one device. However, some runners prefer to run with two devices (such as their GPS watch plus the Strava app as a backup).

Is the race time frame based on my own local time or the New York City time zone?

You should follow your own local time zone for the race time frame. You can start your race any time between Saturday, October 22 at 12:00 a.m. and Sunday, November 6 at 11:59 p.m. You must upload your run to Strava by 11:59 p.m. (in your time zone) on Wednesday, November 9.

Is there a time limit for any Virtual TCS New York City Marathon tier?

No. However, you must complete the full 26.2-mile distance in a single run activity during one calendar day.

Can I complete my Virtual Marathon in multiple runs that add up to 26.2 miles?

No. For all tiers you must complete the full 26.2-mile distance in a single run activity during one calendar day and upload the activity to Strava.

What should I do if my race distance is showing on Strava as slightly less than the marathon distance of 26.2 miles?

Please try manually updating your activity distance on Strava by following the below instructions:

  • Go to your activity page on the Strava website (this feature is currently not accessible in the mobile app).
  • Click on the link directly below your current distance listed on the Activity Details page, where it says "Distance(?)" in small letters.
  • From the pop-up, click "Correct Distance".
  • When the status changes from "Calculating" to "Updated," refresh the page.

If you would like to revert the change, you can click the same link and click "Revert Distance". If this still isn’t properly updating your distance, please contact Strava at support@strava.zendesk.com.

How do I know if my Virtual TCS NYC Marathon has been uploaded, saved correctly, and will count in the results?

Your race has been properly counted if you receive the digital badge in your Strava trophy case and your name is listed on the Strava challenge leaderboard. Race results will be available on NYRR Race Results and in your NYRR dashboard by Thursday, November 16.
