I really appreciate that,” he said.

Read MoreMandy Kwan immigrated to Brooklyn from Hong Kong when she was 11 years old and was impressed by the wide-open spaces and greenery, something she didn’t expect. Instead, she’d pictured tall buildings like densely populated Hong Kong. She ran her first race, the NYRR Washington Heights Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K, in March and took on the SHAPE + Health Women's Half Marathon the following month. On November 5, she plans to run the TCS New York City Marathon.
Read MoreWhen Aubrey Barr was just four years old, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was given six months to live. In 1971 the survival rate for this type of cancer was less than 10%. Over the next several years, she received experimental chemotherapy treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering that would save her life. Beating the odds, her cancer went into full remission when she was 17 years old. Aubrey has run more than 25 New York City Marathons and plans on running again this year with Fred's Team.
