How to Start Training for the TCS New York City Marathon
Training for the TCS New York City Marathon? This year’s race is on November 5, which means we’re less than 6 months out from race day. Whether you’re training for your first marathon, getting back to running after a long break, or just need a refresher, these tips will help kick off your marathon training!
Tip #1: Figure out your motivation and your WHY.
Ask yourself, why do you want to run the marathon? Is it to stay or get in shape? Or maybe for your overall mental and physical health? Are you running for a cause that is dear to you or in honor of a loved one who has passed? Whatever your reason, knowing your WHY will motivate you to get out the door for each workout and will give each mile more meaning. Remembering your why will not only help during the 20, 16, or 12 weeks left of training, it will also help while you’re conquering those 26.2 miles to the finish line.
Tips #2 and #3: Get a training plan and find a community.
Finding the right training plan and community of runners will help you stay accountable and healthy throughout your training. If you are still looking for a coaching plan, check out NYRR Coaching Lab by Runcoach, a personalized training app that provides a customized training plan, a dedicated coach for one-on-one guidance, and advice from NYRR coaches for insider training tips. If you live in the New York City area, NYRR Group Training will offer you a community of runners and coaches to help you stay on track. Workouts meet in NYC parks including Astoria Park, Central Park, and Prospect Park. These sessions offer coaching, camaraderie, and the inspiration that comes from running with others no matter where you are on your running journey. You’ll also have fun! Another way to find community and stay motivated is by joining a run club. Check out our list of run clubs in the NYC metro area to find one that matches your interests and goals.
Tip #4: Start building a base.
November 5 is less than 6 months away. Now is a great time to start building your base. If you are new to running or getting back to running from taking a long break, this is especially important. What is a base? It can be mileage, community, or resources. Your mileage should be easy and relaxed, and your community and resources should be growing throughout your weeks of training.
Now that you know how to get started, stay tuned for more training tips to help you conquer those 26.2 miles!
