Beat the Marathon Blues by Applying for ‘The One to Run’
The 2018 TCS New York City Marathon is over and as that finish-line feeling of euphoria eventually wears off, you—finally—have to take off your medal and return to normal. That is when the marathon blues start to creep in.
Ask any marathoner and they will tell you the feeling is real. The great Fred Lebow, co-founder of the New York City Marathon and longtime leader of NYRR, wrote this after the 1981 race: “I suffered my usual post-marathon depression afterward...Suddenly, I didn’t know what was left to accomplish. It was a little frightening to think of what might come next, or what might not come.”
And it’s not just finishers, either. Those who volunteered or lined the streets to spectate can often catch the marathon bug. But with the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon a little under a year away, people are left searching for a reason to get motivated again.
Thankfully, we’re here to help.
The first step in battling the marathon blues—after taking several days to celebrate your achievement—is to enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win one of 262 prizes consisting of one guaranteed, non-complimentary entry to the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon and one pair of New Balance training socks. The muscles may be sore, but the thought of running the five boroughs again in 2019 is enough to wash away the aches in those legs.
However, a year can be a long time to wait and maybe you cannot contemplate another 26.2 miles right now. So for those looking for a challenge much sooner—and a shorter distance-—then there’s only one race for you and that is “The One to Run,” the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half.
Running New York City’s five boroughs is a unique, once-a-year experience, but there’s still so much of the city to see. And what better way to see iconic parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan than running the NYC Half. Its 13.1-mile course begins in Brooklyn, goes over the Manhattan Bridge, cuts through Chinatown, heads north on the FDR Drive, zips through Times Square, and finishes in Central Park.
Runners will get to take in beautiful skyline views of Brooklyn and Queens, passing iconic spots such as Chinatown, Little Italy, the United Nations, and Grand Central Terminal en route. The breathtaking course is a must-see for any runner, whether you’re a longtime New Yorker or a weekend visitor to the city.
More than 42,000 people entered the drawing for the 2018 race, which stopped traffic in Times Square. That number is expected to grow as the world-class race has become a bucket-list event for runners from the five boroughs, across the country, and around the world.
So beat the marathon blues with an application for the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half. Apply by the November 14 deadline for your chance to run this amazing race on Sunday, March 17. The drawing is free to enter and limited to one entry per person; the field will be determined on November 28.
Entry for “The One to Run” is available through the drawing, a charity partner, time qualification, NYRR Team for Kids, a travel partner, or our Four Out of Six program.
